Passive Optical LANs in the Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs) vertical market come in all shapes and sizes. They can be a 40-story, 242-unit luxury condominium complex in Atlanta Georgia, like Park Place. They can be student housing complexes at major universities spread across the nation. They can also be temporary housing, cottage style housing, senior living, assisted living, work-camp or downtown multi-use facilities.
What makes these MDU network architectures unique is that they demand a mix of residential and business functions, which makes them perfect candidates for the passive Optical LAN architecture. Not only do these MDUs have living units and common areas but they have on-site business areas; they'll include controlled access, security systems, security surveillance, building automation, Wi-Fi and even DAS. These networks will expect enterprise features and function, such as Power over Ethernet Plus, IEEE 802.1x, MAC bypass, IPv6, LLDP, advanced VLAN and elegant remote powering support. These MDU networks require a far greater level of sophistication than a residential Fiber-to-the-Home network.
At the Broadband Communities 2015 Summit in Austin Texas on April 14-16, I will be part of an expert panel debating "Gigafying the MDU". This panel will tackle MDU topics such as bandwidth, network performance, security, entertainment content, over-the-top content, Wi-Fi and DAS.
